Waimea College has approximately 1500 students, 40 of whom qualify as high or very high needs learners and attract ORRS (Ongoing Reviewable Resourcing Scheme) funding; they are able to remain in college until they turn 21 years old.
The Special Education Department promotes student success through adapting the New Zealand curriculum with functional life-skills goals and providing integrated specialist services, e.g. speech and language therapy and physiotherapy, to support student learning.
Each student, their family and teaching team negotiate their individual education plan in which priority goals are set for the next six months. These are achieved through a broad, balanced, differentiated curriculum in which independence, participation, relevance and fun are our cornerstones. Visit our blog www.waimeanz.blogspot.com to see what this looks like.
Transition education for life after school is a particular strength in the department. This begins at 17 or 18 years with a negotiated ITP (Individual transition Plan) and involves education around community living and participation, self-determination skills, employment and post-secondary education, recreation, leisure and transport.
We are very proud of the achievements our students make individually and as part of the College and recommend to anyone interested in enrolling that you visit and see for yourself.
